Overview
World Habitat Day is observed annually on the first Monday of October to raise awareness of the state of towns and cities and to reaffirm the fundamental right of every person to adequate housing. Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985, the observance provides an opportunity for governments, professional organizations, research institutions, communities and development partners to reflect on the opportunities and challenges facing rapidly urbanizing societies.
Activities held around the world include policy dialogues, technical conferences, public awareness campaigns, community initiatives and recognition of outstanding achievements in sustainable urban development through the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award.
World Habitat Day also marks the beginning of Urban October, a month-long global campaign promoting dialogue on housing, urbanization and sustainable cities.
